Description THIS VACANCY IS FOR FIRE VEHICLE/APPARATUS REPAIRS.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  1. High School diploma or GED equivalency certification. An evaluation of foreign high school diploma may be required.
  2. Three (3) years experience as a mechanic at the journey level.
  3. A minimum of six (6) months experience in the maintenance and repair of fire apparatus or heavy-duty equipment.
  4. Experience with diesel engines preferred.
  5. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Truck certification and/or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification preferred.
  6. Experience in basic warehousing for inventory, stock and procurement of necessary items preferred.
  7. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Such experience must be clearly documented on the application.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  8. Must complete two (2) ASE Truck certification within one (1) year from date of employment.
  9. Must complete one (1) level of Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification within three (3) years from date of employment.
  10. Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License without any restrictions that may affect ability to perform the essential functions of the work outlined herein.
  11. Must be able to obtain a Class B Driver’s License within six (6) months of employment.
  12. Ability to work any shift, including holidays, and weekends at any location according to agency needs.

This is technical work in the troubleshooting, diagnostics, maintenance and repair of fire and rescue services equipment for an assigned location within the Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services. Employees in this classification are responsible for administering testing procedures to ensure operational state of readiness; evaluating the condition of equipment, vehicles and/or apparatus according to standard life cycles; and providing recommendations for upgrades/replacements accordingly. Performs related work as directed.

Applies diagnostic skills and tools in the troubleshooting of fire and rescue services equipment repair and maintenance needs.

Initiates parts and inventory requests; tracks frequently utilized inventory items and ensures appropriate stock levels to ensure minimum down-time when servicing equipment; assists during emergency callouts as directed.

Designs and develops procedures to test, operate and evaluate the proper performance of fire and rescue services equipment.

Provides training and advisement to department personnel in the proper use, application of testing, operating and evaluation procedures of fire and rescue services equipment.

Evaluates the operational condition and effectiveness of existing equipment according to standard life cycle specifications; provides recommendations for upgrades/replacement accordingly.

Performs initial operational testing of new fire and rescue equipment and/or vehicle acquisitions to ensure adherence to pre-determined specifications.

Inspects, maintains, tests, and/or repairs various basic fire and rescue equipment e.g., exhaust fans, hoses, valves, nozzles, SCBA air compressor systems and breathing equipment, small generators, oxygen systems and other mechanical devices; ensures testing meets OSHA requirements.

Implements and maintains preventative maintenance procedures and schedules for related fire and rescue services equipment.

Maintains regulatory updates, equipment manuals, and product catalogs pertaining to fire and rescue services equipment.

Conveys status of requests for equipment that is out of service for repair/inspection and determines need for future replacements.

Determines priority service requirements considering department/unit operational readiness requirements; efficiently coordinates service and repair tasks. Prepares and distributes month end reports, maintains logs, records, and properly documents work activities, e.g., inventory logs, maintenance, and repairs activities.

Ensures inventory/fixed assets are processed according to State statutes; issues property control identification numbers, tags equipment and maintains a computer database of all tangible property.

Operates various standard hand- held manual, electrical and gas-powered tools and equipment.

Cleans and disinfects fire and rescue services equipment and devices according to departmental procedures.

May operate an agency vehicle.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit

members. Performs related duties as directed.

Applicants who qualify will be subject to an extensive selection process and screening program, which may include, but not be limited to evaluation of training and experience; written test; computer based test; interview; polygraph examination; psychological evaluation; employment record, fingerprint and background check; medical examination; and drug screen. The expected duration of the selection process varies by position and could last 10 to 12 weeks. Reapplication will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
