OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE
Under the general direction of the Fire Chief, this position is responsible for All-Hazards Response while on duty with reasonable call-back expectations in response to structure fires. Calls for service include commercial, industrial, and residential fire suppression, EMS, hazmat, and a variety of other emergency services requests.
In addition to the primary role of response, this position will actively deliver community risk reduction programs and provide a variety of station and equipment-related tasks while on shift.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position that will require working a rotating 24-hour schedule averaging 2,912 work hours a year. Each shift consists of a full-time captain, a full-time firefighter and a part-time firefighter on a daily basis.

Expected Hiring Range: $65,416-$71,489 annually
Full Salary Range: $65,416-$82,867 annually
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Provide all aspects of fire extinguishment and suppression activities.
- Respond to and investigate residential and commercial fire alarms.
- Properly select, deploy, and apply the appropriate hose stream to a working fire.
- Properly select, deploy, and climb ladders as necessary for the situation.
- Operate, position, and deploy major fire apparatus for any response incident.
- Properly select, deploy, and operate hydraulic and electric rescue tools.
- Properly select and operate chain saws, rescue saws, and hand tools.
- Properly deploy and utilize lifesaving equipment such as LUCAS and AED’s.
- Ability to arrive on scene and act as initial incident commander providing scene size; determining appropriate actions and assigning the first 2 incoming units.
- Assist with planning, scheduling, and presenting Fire Prevention activities to students aged pre-school to teen.
- Assist with planning, scheduling, and presenting Community Risk Reduction activities to local businesses and community members including adults and children: Hands Only CPR/AED; Fire Extinguisher Training; Fire Prevention for Seniors, and other prevention-related programs.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge in building construction and suppression systems within the response area
- Ability to perform minor maintenance, cleaning, and repairs of stations, tools/equipment, and apparatus.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office Products and fire department records management software
- for a variety of administrative tasks.
- Ability to interact with business and property owners in the course of fire inspections.
- General knowledge of fire response tactics allowing for the completion of incident preplans.
- Knowledge of standard fire inspection and prevention techniques.
- Read, interpret and enforce applicable city, state and federal codes, ordinances and regulations and communicate these to the public.
- Ability to serve all members of the community and consider the perspectives of multiple communities, people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Currently licensed by the State of Minnesota as a Firefighter under the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education to include IFSAC Certifications Firefighter I, Firefighter II, HazMat Operations or the ability to obtain licensing upon hire.
- Certification by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) as an Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B) or higher. Candidates without this designation would be required to obtain prior to the end of a 1-year probationary period.
- Fire Apparatus Operator Certification
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Five or more years of experience in the fire service
- The ability to demonstrate direct actions that example a desire for education and experience towards advancement in the fire service
- Post-secondary education in Fire Science or closely related field
- Blue Card Incident Command Certification. Candidates without this designation would be required to obtain prior to the end of a 1-year probationary period.
- Fire Inspector Certification. Candidates without certification will be required to complete within one year of employment as a condition of employment
EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION
This position requires the ability to work outdoors and indoors in all types of weather, around dangerous machinery, work with chemicals, and near fumes and vapors. Must be able to verbally communicate clearly, adequately hear in loud situations, and have adequate vision, in order to perform the essential functions of the job.
This position requires very frequent (and often required to perform the job adequately) significant physical activity. This includes standing, walking, lifting, pushing/pulling, carrying, climbing, kneeling, crawling, crouching, bending, reaching, the extended use of arm and leg muscles over long periods, lifting overhead, and stationary desk or bench work. This position will occasionally be required to lift/move up to 75-115 pounds.
CALL BACK
This position requires reasonable call back for major incidents. Firefighters will be required to live within a reasonable distance to the fire station (30 minutes or less) within 6-months of appointment, and thereafter.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Maintain residency within a 30-minute drive of the Chanhassen Fire Station, 7610 Laredo Drive, within six months of hire.
- Must comply with organizational and department policies
- Must possess a valid Class D driver’s license
- The City has determined that a criminal background check, medical assessment, and psychological assessment are necessary for this role.
