Description Performs a wide variety of administrative and technical tasks and functions in support of fire
safety inspections for identified occupancies for the Fire Prevention Bureau of the Fire
Department

Primary

Perform building and site plan review for all new construction; prepare written fire code requirements; conduct final occupancy inspections; perform yearly inspections and re-inspections for all childcare homes and centers.

Coordinate fire inspection program, including scheduling and prioritizing inspections and training operational firefighters and Deputy Fire Marshals.

Conduct meetings with contractors, architects, owners and other agencies regarding construction projects and activities.
Perform code interpretation and enforcement guidelines to department personnel, citizens and professional agencies; organize and maintain records.

Coordinate fire investigations to determine cause and origin; coordinate shift Deputy Marshals activities; coordinate with private and State Fire Marshal's Office Fire Investigators.

Coordinate activities with the Office of the State Fire Marshal regarding fire arson investigations.

Participate in the adoption of local fire ordinances and coordinate with the Office of the State Fire Marshal regarding Code adoption, enactment and enforcement.

Make necessary contact with the State Fire Marshal's office and the State Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission regarding Code variance requests.

Secondary

Assist in the development and administration of the division budget; forecast the funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitor the expenditures and recommend adjustments as necessary to implement the mission of the Fire Prevention Bureau and the Fire Department.

Assist the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Development in the administration of the City of Bloomington Unsafe Building law in coordination with necessary City and County agencies, including case presentation to the Board of Public Works.

Assist the Community Engagement Officer giving tours of assigned fire station, demonstrate fire equipment
and apparatus, and participate in other educational programs for various groups and general
public in the absence of the Community Engagement Officer.

Position as a full-time Fire or Building Inspector with state, local or federal fire or building service organization for a minimum of two years.

High school diploma or equivalent.

State certification as a firefighter first class or equivalent.

State certification in fire prevention/inspector or equivalent.

State certification in fire/arson investigation or equivalent.

Possession of a valid Indiana Motor Vehicle Operators License.Environmental Conditions:
Work is performed in a variety of conditions including office setting, construction sites, emergency scenes and emergency firefighting environment know to be immediately dangerous to life and health.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of
work including City and other government officials, community groups, the public and
media representatives.
