Lateral Prerequisites

• Meet the requirements of the Texas Department of State Health Services for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (Basic)
• Meet the requirements set forth in NFPA 1580, 2025 Standard for Emergency Responder Occupational Health and Wellness (2025)
• Applicants must have been actively employed as a structural firefighter with one or more municipalities, Emergency Service Districts (ESDs), military, or county fire departments within the two (2) years immediately preceding the application date
• Applicants must possess a minimum of three (3) years of total active service as a full-time paid firefighter with one or more municipalities, ESDs, military, or county fire departments
• Meet the requirements of the Texas Commission on Fire Protection for certification as a Structure Firefighter (Basic)
• Applicants must not be older than 35 on the day of the written exam
