Description Coconut Creek Fire Rescue is committed to providing the highest level of fire and emergency services to our community. Our mission is to protect lives, property, and the environment through prevention, education, and emergency response. We are seeking a motivated and dedicated Fire Rescue Intern to join our team and gain hands-on experience in the field of fire and emergency services. Position Summary: The Fire Rescue Intern will work closely with our fire rescue personnel to gain practical experience in emergency services operations. This internship is designed for students pursuing a career in Fire Rescue and/or a degree in fire science, emergency management, or a related field. The intern will assist with various tasks and projects, gaining valuable insights into the daily operations of a fire rescue department. Students must be enrolled in an EMS or Fire program related to fire science, emergency management, or a similar field, with an expected graduation date of December 2026. Copy of current transcript MUST be included with the application in order to verify class standing and GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Schedule: Administrative hours are Monday-Thursday, 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
  • Interns will be expected to work 10-20 hours per week during these hours, with a flexible schedule to accommodate classes and other commitments.
  • It is preferred that Mondays are a consistent work day with flexibility throughout the rest of the week.
Internship Length: The internship may last up to one year and is concluded at the completion of or exit from the accreditation college or school. (Must be an active student throughout the year.)

Pay Rate: $15.00 / hour

Note: Preference in hiring interns shall be given to Coconut Creek residents and Coconut Creek employees’ immediate family members who meet the minimum requirements.

General Purpose: The purpose of the Coconut Creek Internship Program is to strengthen relationships between educators and the City of Coconut Creek while assisting students in applying classroom theory in a work environment. Interns will be able to visit and work within all areas of service that the department offers. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Fire Department Intern will support the Fire Department by working closely with the Fire Chief, Administrative Assistants, or Fire Chief’s designee. You will be assisting with daily operations at fire administration and the fire department as a whole. You will be assisting with creation of policies and procedures, tracking of purchases, and logistics.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist fire rescue administration and emergency personnel during training exercises and community events.
  • Observe and participate in fire rescue management, including fire prevention and safety education.
  • Help maintain equipment and fire stations to ensure readiness for emergencies.
  • Support administrative tasks, including data entry, report preparation, and file organization.
  • Participate in public outreach programs to educate the community on fire safety and prevention.
  • Attend classroom training sessions and meetings to further knowledge of fire rescue operations.
  • Assist with creation of policies and procedures
  • Assist with tracking of purchases
  • Assist the logistics coordinator, as needed
  • Assist Administrative Staff with tracking call volume, payroll, placing work orders, and other tasks deemed necessary
  • Assist with creation of presentations, reports, and communications with other city departments
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled in an EMS or Fire program related to fire science, emergency management, or a similar field.
  • Strong interest in fire rescue services and emergency management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently.
  • Basic knowledge of firefighting equipment and emergency response procedures is a plus.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and all Coconut Creek pre-hire criteria.
  • Must submit a letter of recommendation from any current or former EMS/Fire instructor.
Coconut Creek Intern Applicant Requirements

  2. Enrolled as a degree-seeking student by an accredited local college or technical school carrying at least a half-time academic course load
  3. May be required to have a valid driver’s license (depending on department/duties)
  4. Must maintain an active status as a student throughout the internship
  5. Must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 (transcript)
  6. Must be in good academic standing (transcript)
  7. Must attach unofficial transcript from last semester to be included with the online application

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Depending on the functional area of the assignment, tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 80 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or the use of proper techniques and moving equipment. Tasks may involve some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation and extended periods of time standing and/or walking.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes and/or poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature, and noise extremes, machinery, and/or moving vehicles, vibrations, electric currents, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, gases or chemicals, oils, and other cutting fluids, violence and/or disease, or pathogenic substances.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors.
